Francisco
J. (Joe) Lewels is a Vice President
at a financial institution in El Paso, Texas,
who has had life-long interest in Ufology and other paranormal
phenomena. He holds a B.A. in
Journalism from Texas Western College,
a M.S. in Education from Troy State
University and a Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communication
from the University of Missouri. Before entering
the world of business, he served as the chairman of the
departments of journalism and mass communication at the
University of Texas at El Paso for nearly ten years. He
attained the rank of captain
in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and served as a reconnaissance
pilot in the Republic of Vietnam,
earning the Bronze Star and Air Medal with oak leaf cluster.
He has worked as a writer and editor for various publications
including the U.S. Army Aviation
Digest magazine and the Freedom
of Information Digest and has worked in the
area of advertising and public relations. He also served
as a communications consultant at the U.S. Department
of Justice in Washington, D.C.
Dr.
Lewels is the author of many scholarly articles on media
law, government censorship and minority access to the
media, and his book, Uses of
the Media by the Chicano Movement was published
by Praeger Publishing Company in 1973. He is the author
of the book The God Hypothesis:
Extraterrestrial Life and its Implications for Science
and Religion, published by Wild Flower Press,
1997.
In
June of 1993, he organized the El Paso chapter of MUFON,
and together with a team of psychiatrists and hypnotherapists,
is conducting research into alien abduction cases in the
Southwest and Mexico. To aid him in his research, he completed
a course of study and was certified
as a licensed hypnotherapist,
accredited by the American Board of Hypnotherapy.
Today, the El Paso Chapter of MUFON
provides free psychiatric evaluations for persons having
abduction experiences as well as support group meetings,
conducted by qualified mental health professionals. Dr.
Lewels currently serves as a communication consultant
to MUFON
and as its assistant state director for West Texas and
Southern New Mexico.
